Did you know that Israel holds a world record for the largest mosaic? And it is made of socks! The Netanya Municipality announced that it has made it into the Guinness Book of World Records for creating the world's largest "socks mosaic" made of no less than 12,000 socks – all of which are clean. The project was produced by the local cultural center in cooperation with the Italian city of Ravenna, which is considered the world capital of mosaics.
The idea to create an untraditional mosaic made of socks was proposed by Netanya artists Yuti and Anat Shamai. "The idea was to get as many people involved, and that the display will be as large and as impressive as possible. We decided to choose a material that is available in every household and that's how we came up with socks," explained Yuti. The mosaic was put together in the city's Independence Square, with the help of many residents.
Following the decision, the municipality turned to all the residents, asking them to donate socks. The request came with one condition –the socks should be clean. The residents gladly cooperated, donating some 12,000 socks for the original project.
Netanya's socks mosaic broke a previous Guinness record of 4,000 weaved socks. "Yuti and I got the exciting message that the mosaic made it into the Guinness Book of World Records. We made history with something positive, fun, and which benefited the people of Netanya," said Anat Shamai.
