Rex David Thomas was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey in 1932. In 2002, he died at the age of 69 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Thomas was adopted as a baby, and as an adult, he was an internationally recognized advocate of adoption. He established the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption, a non-profit organization that assists children in foster care in the United States and Canada in finding permanent homes.

Dave Thomas dropped out of school at the age of 15 to work at a restaurant. He considers it the worst mistake of his life, yet he received his GED in 1993. He became an education champion and established the Dave Thomas Education Center in Coconut Creek, Florida. Young people can take GED lessons at the facility.

His most notable accomplishment was the establishment of Wendy's fast food restaurant chain, which specializes in hamburgers. He was also the president and CEO. From 1989 until 2002, he appeared in over 800 Wendy's television advertisements.
