Water is essential to life, and numerous studies have demonstrated its beneficial impacts on human well-being. Now, a study discovered that getting enough water can lengthen our lives and lower our risk of developing certain diseases. It was published in the journal eBioMedicine.
To determine whether adequate hydration can slow down the rate at which a person ages, researchers from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute in the US examined health information from over 11,000 persons. The researchers observed that a prior, related investigation using mice had confirmed this to be accurate. The data was based on five medical visits made over nearly 25 years, beginning in the late 1980s when participants ranged in age from 45 to 66. The researchers studied changes in individuals' serum sodium levels, which reflect the amount of salt in a person's blood. Serum sodium rises when the body doesn't have enough liquids.
According to the findings, adults with higher serum sodium levels, which are common indicators of dehydration or kidney issues, are more prone to develop a range of chronic diseases. Their bodies were also found to be biologically older than their actual age. Participants who had lower serum sodium levels had lower chronic disease risks and were more likely to live longer than those who had higher blood sodium levels. Serum sodium levels cannot tell us how much water the participants drank, but prior research has shown that most adults don't drink as much water daily as is advised by health organizations.
