According to General Motors, it will have all the renewable energy it needs to run every one of its U.S. plants by 2025, 25 years earlier than anticipated. The Detroit manufacturer claimed to have obtained sourcing agreements from 16 renewable energy plants spread over 10 states, achieving its objective of using only renewable energy by the year 2050.

GM accelerated its all-renewables target date from early 2021 to 2030 and then increased that objective by five years in October. According to GM, the five-year gap will help reduce carbon emissions by an estimated 1 million metric tons, equivalent to the emissions from burning 1 billion pounds of coal. “We believe it is critical — to ourselves, to our customers, and to the planet's future — to step up our efforts and reach ambitious targets that move us closer to a more sustainable world,” says Kristen Siemen, the company’s chief sustainability officer. “Securing the renewable energy we need to achieve our goal demonstrates tangible progress in reducing our emissions in all aspects of our business, ultimately moving us closer to our vision of a future with zero emissions.”

The Detroit carmaker recently pledged to invest $35 billion into the production of electric and autonomous vehicles to get rid of tailpipe emissions from its light-duty vehicles in the United States by 2035.
