In Sweden, cash is increasingly disliked. According to economic analysts, the Scandinavian country may become the first cashless society within the next decade. Some even say that banknotes and coins may become obsolete.
Sweden is one of the few EU member states that do not accept the euro as a form of payment. Since 1873, the Swedish krona has been the country's currency. However, less money has circulated in recent years. Over a hundred billion kronor were in circulation six years ago; currently, barely 80 billion are in circulation.
Swish, a cashless payment method, is one of the reasons behind Sweden's unwillingness to cash. It is a smartphone app developed by Swedish and Danish banks that advocate a cashless economy.
In ordinary life, credit or bank cards, mobile phones, or online banking are used to make around 80% of all payments. Even modest purchases are made digitally. Customers aren't the only ones who appreciate not having to carry so much cash. Most merchants prefer that customers pay using these new methods since it provides them with more security and ease.
