Read the article below.

In the United States, there are over 50 political parties, but the President has always been a member of one of the two major parties, Republicans or Democrats.

The American people do not directly elect the President. Instead, voters vote for an "Elector" who supports the president of their choice, and the victorious Electors then vote for the President. This system, known as the Electoral College, dates back to the 1700s when it was impractical for every citizen to travel to a polling booth.

Citizens do, however, vote directly for the members of the House and Senate who will represent their state. The number of House Representatives (or members of Congress) depends on the population of each state. There are 100 senators, two from each state.

Congress elections take place every two years, with the Presidential election taking place every four years.
