Some of the largest soccer clubs in the world have been making more money than we can even imagine, while many people have had to be more careful about how they spend their money. The Deloitte Football Money League, a yearly report that ranks soccer clubs according to their revenue, makes it all clear to see.

With a revenue of more than $790 million, Manchester City, the English Premier League champion in 2022, is at the top of the list. The research revealed that the top 20 earned a combined total of roughly $10 billion. This relates to earnings in 2021 and 2022 from sales of tickets on game days, agreements with TV networks, sales of merchandise, and other earnings on non-match days. Almost all of the total revenues have already recovered their pre-pandemic levels. With a revenue of around $775 million, Real Madrid is ranked second, although there are 11 English clubs in the top 20. The English Premier League is in demand around the world, and all of the clubs have benefitted from big contracts with international TV networks. And after clubs had to play matches without fans during the pandemic, stadiums are again packed with people.

On days when there are no matches, they have a greater opportunity to generate money. For instance, the third-richest club in the world, Liverpool FC, hosted performances by Elton John and the Rolling Stones in 2022. The top 20 clubs in all of Europe are divided into two German clubs and three Italian teams, with Lionel Messi's Paris Saint-Germain coming in at number five. Deloitte only tracks the revenue the clubs generate, not their profitability, and many of the clubs are suffering significant losses.
