Straws at McDonald's might be a thing of the past, just like the McRib. As part of a multi-year attempt to make its packaging more environmentally friendly, the chain has started testing strawless lids in selected US cities.
“These lids help optimize our packaging and eliminate the use of small plastics, just one example of the many solutions we’re reviewing as part of our ongoing global commitment to reduce waste,” a McDonald’s spokesperson said in a statement. To prevent drinks from spilling out, the plastic lids contain a pulling tab. Customers must pull the tab back and insert it into a small opening in order to drink from it. It resembles the “sippy cup” lid that has been in use at Starbucks for the previous three years. The new McDonald's lids were initially seen by Restaurant Business Online in Minneapolis, where they were undergoing testing. Customers can still ask for a straw if they need one, according to the report.
Particularly during the last few years, fast food restaurants have been looking for ways to cut waste and be more environmentally friendly. Plastic straws in particular can increase the number of microplastics in the ocean and endanger marine life. In 2018, McDonald's declared a target to cut greenhouse gas emissions from its restaurants and headquarters by 36% from 2015 to 2030. Some of the chain's plastic Happy Meal toys were replaced in 2021 by 3D paper-based toys that consumers could assemble themselves.
