Mergers and Acquisitions: A Basic Overview

Companies frequently join forces in the world of business. This can occur in two ways: mergers and acquisitions.

A merger occurs when two companies decide to merge to form a larger entity. Consider two tiny rivers coming together to produce a larger river. Both organizations join forces, share resources, and collaborate as one team. A classic example from the past is when two large corporations, Exxon and Mobil, merged to form ExxonMobil.

An acquisition is a bit different. It occurs when one corporation acquires another. The acquired company's name may be retained or replaced. However, it becomes part of the larger firm that purchased it. Consider a large fish devouring a tiny fish.

Why do corporations do this? There are numerous reasons. Some people strive to grow as quickly as possible. Others wish to provide additional items or services. Some businesses unite to save money or reach new markets.

In the end, mergers and acquisitions help organizations become stronger and better serve their customers. They must, however, be carefully designed and supervised. They may encounter difficulties if they do not.

Change is unavoidable in business. Mergers and acquisitions are simply one technique for firms to evolve in order to achieve their objectives.
