According to the Pew Research Center, women make up more than half of all college-educated individuals employed in the US today. In comparison to 30.5 million men, that amounts to around 31.3 million women. This is nothing new for 2022. Since the end of 2019, there have been more women than men in the US employees who are over 25 and have at least a bachelor's degree.
Should this, therefore, surprise us? Yes and no - in the US, women hold more bachelor's degrees than men. However, American women also tend to raise their children at home more frequently. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics provided the information used by Pew. Around 4 million more men than women held jobs requiring a bachelor's degree or above in 1992. Ten years later, the difference was around 3 million. According to Pew data, fewer moms are raising their children at home during the past 50 years, which frequently results in women returning to or entering the workforce. According to a Politico report from the middle of 2021, 1.8 million women in the US have left their jobs during the pandemic, frequently as a result of the difficulty in locating child care.
Pew adds that many of the women who quit their jobs during the pandemic lacked bachelor's degrees. In reality, while the percentage of males seeking employment has increased, the percentage of women working or looking for work has declined among those with degrees. Additionally, the National Center for Education Statistics in the United States reports that every year since 1982, more women than men have received bachelor's degrees.
