The owner of movie theaters, Cineworld Group LLC, has applied for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States as it struggles with massive debt and lower-than-expected moviegoer attendance. According to CEO Mooky Greidinger, “The pandemic was an incredibly difficult time for our business, with the enforced closure of cinemas and a huge disruption to film schedules that has led us to this point.”
Existing lenders have made commitments to the company and its subsidiaries for a roughly $1.94 billion debtor-in-possession financing facility, which will assist ensure Cineworld's activities continue as usual while it goes through a reorganization. The British company, which runs in ten nations and owns Regal Cinemas in the U.S., stated that its theaters were still "open for business as usual while it looked into ways to reduce its debt.
Without accounting for leasing liabilities, Cineworld has accrued net debt of $4.8 billion. The corporation, which employs roughly 28,000 people, already acknowledged that recent admissions have recently been below expectations. Additionally, it anticipates the lower levels to last until November due to a "limited film slate." That would put even more pressure on its budget. In the first quarter of 2023, Cineworld plans to emerge from Chapter 11.
