Paris Named World's 'Most Powerful' Tourism City

Many tourists love Paris because of its world-famous history, food, fashion, and arts. And this "city of love" is now referred to as the "most powerful" tourist destination in the entire world. Based on analysis by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), travel and tourism are expected to directly contribute $36 billion to the city's economy in 2022. According to the WTTC, this makes Paris the "most powerful" of 82 significant tourism destinations globally.

Cities like Paris, London, and New York will continue to be "global powerhouses" for tourism, according to Julia Simpson, CEO of the WTTC. However, she predicted that Beijing, Shanghai, and Macau would rise in popularity over the following years. The WTTC reported that after the catastrophic effects of the coronavirus pandemic, international travel started to return to normal in 2022. It observed that initially travelers preferred to travel to less crowded areas like the coast or the countryside, but its most recent research revealed that city vacations had once again gained popularity.

With tourism expected to boost Beijing's economy by $33 billion by 2022, it came second to Paris on the WTTC ranking. However, the WTTC predicted that in the following ten years, Shanghai, the largest city in China, and the capital of that country, Beijing, will overtake Paris and move into third place. Orlando, Florida, finished in third place for 2022, with $31 billion of that amount coming from tourism. Tokyo came in eighth with $18 billion in tourism revenue. Shanghai, Paris, and Beijing had the three cities with the most significant direct economic impacts from tourism in 2018, according to the WTTC's Cities Economic Impact Report for 2022.
