Recommendations are given to us for a reason — someone thought they might keep us safe or healthy. For instance, a specific amount of fruit and vegetables to eat or enough water to drink. But with exercise, we might need to go above and beyond what experts recommend if we truly want to have the best chance of living longer. That is supported by a large, long-term study that was published by the American Heart Association in 2022.
Over 115,000 people participated in the survey. Over 30 years, researchers examined the individuals on how much exercise they were getting. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), individuals should engage in 150–300 minutes of moderate activity or 75–150 minutes of vigorous exercise each week. And the study recommends that it's ideal if you're exercising correctly. By exercising, you could be up to 25% less likely to die young than non-exercisers. However, those who exercised for two to four times as long as the WHO recommends — 300 to 600 minutes of moderate exercise or 150 to 300 minutes of intense exercise — were more likely to live longer.
Comparing those who were only exercising to the prescribed levels, the researchers found that these individuals were lowering their risk of early death by 2% to 13%. Of course, we should be careful to avoid overdoing recommendations. However, according to CNN's Dong Hoon Lee, the study's author, people who did much more than the recommended amount of exercise were not found to have any health problems because of the extra activity.
