Consider the possibility that the hair clogging your drain could work to clean it. That is what is taking place in Belgium, where recycled human hair is clearing the country's water. Hairdressers throughout the nation are collecting the hair they trim from their clients' heads and place it in bags. A non-profit group that manages a project called "Hair Recycle" then collects these bags of hair.

Hair collected by Hair Recycle is processed by a machine to create square mats 60 centimeters in size. Then, in order to stop oil and other pollution from entering a river or stream, these mats might be placed in a drain. One kilogram of hair can absorb up to eight liters of oil, according to the Hair Recycle website. Hair salons must contribute a nominal charge to participate in the scheme. They then receive bags to collect the hair and a sticker for their window to display to consumers as proof that they are doing their part to protect the environment. Additionally participating salons in the Hair Recycle project are those in Luxembourg and the Netherlands.

However, Hair Recycle in Belgium is not the only project to recycle hair. A business in the UK and Ireland by the name of Green Salon Collective recycles hair along with other salon waste, such as metal, paper, plastic, and chemicals. Additionally, a similar business in the US and Canada under the name of Green Circle Salons recycles hair and other salon waste. So perhaps having hair in the drain is a good thing?
