A Japanese café has become a social media sensation because of its unusual rules - only writers are allowed inside, and they are not allowed to leave until they have finished their work. A writer leaves a card at the Manuscript Writing Café in Koenji, Tokyo, indicating how long they intend to stay and how much writing they want to accomplish.

Additionally, three different progress checks are available to writers. If you select ‘Mild,’ you will only be questioned about your work completed when you leave. If you select ‘Normal,’ a staff member will ask about your job performance every hour. However, if you select ‘Hard,’ a staff member will stand discreetly behind you in addition to the hourly checks to increase the pressure on you. Free tea and coffee are available to writers at any time. Customers are uplifted to bring their food and drink because, aside from that, this café doesn't offer any. You are paying for your time, therefore finishing promptly is another consideration. For 30 minutes, a counter seat costs 240 yen, or about $2, and a table seat costs 360 yen, or almost $3.

If you haven't finished your job, you can keep writing even after the store closes. You'll pay more for that though - 4,800 yen an hour, or over $40! Takuya Kawai, the café's owner, says that the business supports writers. According to him, because of the guidelines, jobs that often take three hours were accomplished in one, while projects that a writer “thought would take a day actually were completed in three hours.”
