Southwest Airlines has decided to give its pilots a bonus of over $45 million as "gratitude pay" for persevering through the company's service collapse at the end of the previous year during the busy holiday travel season. Although it did not immediately specify which employees or how much they would earn, the airline stated that it will also pay out compensation to other employee groups that worked during the time.
The union that represents Southwest's 18,000 flight attendants said that its members had also been granted some additional compensation, although it gave no further details. In total, Southwest employs 9,400 pilots. A statement from the Southwest Airlines Pilots Association to its members revealed the projected cost of their bonus pay, stating that the "gratitude pay" will be equal to 50% of the pilots' regular pay, excluding holiday pay, sick pay, or vacation time.
More than 16,700 flights were canceled between December 21 and December 29 as a result of service issues, which Southwest said earlier this month will cost the firm between $725 million and $825 million. The majority of the 83% of Southwest employees who are represented by union groups are now negotiating seven separate contracts with the airline. In May, the pilots have plans to hold a strike vote. The federal law that governs labor relations in the sector places strong restrictions on airline employee strikes, and if a strike ever started, it would take months, if not years.
