Some people view negotiation as a competition. Others see compromise as the key. However, if we approach it as a collaborative effort, frequently both parties may achieve their goals. Effective negotiation abilities can inspire others, obtain the best outcomes, and increase you to inspire others, obtaining the best outcomes, and increasing profitability whether you're negotiating a multimillion-dollar contract, deciding on your position in a project, or simply persuading your coworkers to go out for lunch.

It's a common fallacy that pushing on our point of view to acquire what we want is what negotiation is all about. Others, on the other hand, believe that negotiating is all about compromise and that we must be prepared to give up half of what we want. However, viewing negotiation as either insisting on something or compromising can damage relations and make both parties feel defeated. There is an alternative, claim Fisher and Ury in their best-selling book Getting to Yes. They contend that effective negotiation requires cooperation.

Realizing that negotiations are not necessarily a competitive situation is the first step in comprehending the function of collaboration in them. It's not necessary for one person's "win" to equal another person's "loss." Examining the needs and interests of both parties might open our eyes to potential solutions. Here are five strategies for working together during negotiations: 1) be aware of your goals; 2) separate the people from the topic; 3) ask questions and listen; 4) identify common interests; and 5) consider innovative solutions.
