According to a report by the Economist Intelligence Unit, New York and Singapore are the most expensive cities in the world. The annual report that was published is based on the cost of items in 172 cities worldwide. Prices increased by 8.1% on average across all of these cities, which is the highest rate in at least 20 years.
One of the causes of the increase is the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which has had an impact on production and trade worldwide. Fuel price increases have also had a significant impact. However, the top two places on the list are now held by New York and Singapore thanks to their strong currencies and high salaries.
Eight of the last ten years have seen Singapore as the best city. The most expensive city in the world in 2021, Tel Aviv in Israel, ranked third in 2022, after Hong Kong, Los Angeles, and Zurich. In the top 10, which was determined by a poll of the costs of goods and services conducted in August and September 2022, were Geneva, San Francisco, Paris, Copenhagen, and Sydney. Numerous cities in Europe and Asia, including Brussels, Busan, and Tokyo, dropped down the list as a result of some currencies losing value in comparison to the US dollar. The Japanese capital fell from 13th to 37th in 2022. Due to price increases brought on by Western sanctions, Moscow and St. Petersburg have climbed up the list. Despite the likelihood that fuel and food prices would remain high globally in 2023, the research anticipates significant drops in both in the coming months.
