Most scientists who go on Antarctic expeditions come back with cold fingers and toes, but one team who finished their work in January 2023 also brought back one of the biggest meteorites ever discovered on the continent. During their journey, they discovered five meteorites, the largest of which weighed 7.6 kilograms. Even though it's only around the size of a melon, not many meteorites in Antarctica have been larger than that. Nevertheless, it's a massive meteorite.
Not because more meteorites fall on the continent, but rather because it is simpler to detect the dark rocks on the brilliant, blue-white ice, which makes Antarctica an ideal area to collect meteorites. An international team of scientists from Europe and America discovered the meteorite, which was the size of a melon. When one of the team members spotted the meteorite, they were nearing the conclusion of their month-long hunt. One of the scientists, Maria Valdes, told NPR, "We got so excited."
Although it can be challenging to distinguish between meteorites and Earth rocks, the experts quickly determined that the object was a meteorite. However, because they contain a lot of metal, space rocks are typically significantly heavier and can often be identified by experts simply by glancing at a rock. According to Valdes, scientists refer to Earth rocks that resemble meteorites as "meteor wrongs." The five meteorites will now be examined by scientists. Since many meteorites date back to the early solar system (about 4.5 billion years ago), examining them enables us to learn a lot about those times.
