The phrase "small talk" is commonly used in and out of the business sector. But, when questioned, few of those who use the word can accurately describe what it implies. One must first understand it to genuinely appreciate and benefit from small talk.

Business executives frequently employ small talk, or non-official discussion meant to give a respite from the formal conversation. Most individuals take brief pauses during the workday to talk with others, and business professionals are no exception—even if they're switching from one topic to another.

Small chat may be about nearly anything in the world, as long as it is suitable. Weather, weekend plans, and sports are all good topics for small conversations. Unacceptable small talk topics, or small topic concerns that are unpleasant and/or unsuitable, should be avoided at all costs since they might jeopardize corporate ties and lead to dismissal. Violence and sexual material, as well as racist and/or sexist topics, are prominent examples of prohibited small talk topics.

Other small talk topics, such as politics, current events, and personal preferences, aren't inherently bad, but they should be avoided because they may quickly lead to disagreement and confrontation. And, as many readers are aware, conflict and disagreement are best avoided—particularly in business.

Small talk that is suitable and embraced by another person can serve to build connections, increase business-conversation productivity, and allow business professionals to have some fun. Yet, if too much time is spent on small chat, there will not be enough time for professional dialogue!
