The majority of us have the misconception that people who work in fields such as rocket science and brain surgery are exceptionally intelligent. According to research undertaken by scientists, average members of the population may possess intelligence levels comparable to those of great achievers. Researchers from University College London recruited 329 aerospace engineers and 72 neurosurgeons to participate in a series of tests designed to evaluate their cognitive abilities in six distinct domains. The researchers compared their own data to that of 18,257 respondents who had previously participated in the study and taken the tests. "Only two differences were significant," the researchers claimed: "The neurosurgeons' problem-solving speed was quicker, and their memory recall speed was slower."

The research casts doubt on the veracity of the use of English expressions like "this isn't rocket science" and "that isn't brain surgery." When we use these statements, we are trying to convey the idea that something is actually not too difficult to comprehend. Are fields like neurobiology and aeronautics really that difficult to understand? The findings of the researchers helped to illuminate this topic. They made the following statement: "In situations that do not require rapid problem solving, it might be more correct to use the phrase It's not brain surgery.' However, this phrase should be avoided in situations where rapid information recall is required." This gives hope to all of us the possibility of pursuing jobs that we had previously written off due to the "genius-level" qualifications that were necessary. On the other hand, this might result in an abundance of neurosurgeons and rocket scientists.
