The Unite union claims that the UK steel industry, which supports thousands of employees, is "a whisker away from collapse." It has requested an immediate meeting with Business Secretary Grant Shapps to advocate for further funding. The government, according to Unite, has taken "little meaningful action" to support the industry, leaving it "at breaking point." The development of the steel industry is a priority, according to the government.
Steve Turner, the assistant general secretary of Unite, claimed in the letter that a variety of problems were plaguing the business. "Collapsing energy costs, carbon taxes, lost markets, decreasing demand, and open markets for imported steel" were a few of these. The difficulties faced by companies like British Steel, Tata Steel, and Liberty Steel are a result of "direct actions by your government that have significantly undermined UK plant competitiveness in global markets," according to a letter from Mr. Turner to Mr. Shapps on behalf of two additional unions, Community and GMB. Chancellor Jeremy Hunt is reportedly ready to approve a £300 million funding package for British Steel. The Treasury has not acknowledged the funds, but according to the BBC, they are contingent on the Chinese owner of the company, Jingye, investing in environmentally friendly technology.
An official from the Department for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy responded to the letter by saying that the government understood "the crucial role that steel plays within the UK economy, supporting local jobs and economic growth." Jonathan Reynolds, Labour's shadow business secretary, claimed the UK steel industry has been put "on the brink" as a result of the government's unwillingness to come up with long-term solutions when commenting on the proposed support package for British Steel.
