You choose an audiobook to listen to. As as soon as you press "play," Madison's voice will start narrating the story. This circumstance doesn't seem unusual. Madison isn't real, though. And neither are Apple's new artificial intelligence (AI) audiobook narrators Jackson, Helena, and Mitchell.

The company has released a number of audiobooks using digital voices that closely resemble human narrators. Apple explained on its website that it wants to support the publication of audiobooks by smaller writers and publishers because they are typically expensive and difficult to produce. The service is now exclusive to romance and fiction books, and it is only available in English. Authors interested in using it can send their book to one of Apple's two publishing partners for audiobooks. The audiobook will be available on Apple Books in two months if it is approved, according to the company.

Some people are concerned that AI narrators may eventually completely replace human narrators as a result of Apple's statement. Others, however, contend that while this new technology will impact the audiobook industry in certain ways, human narration still has a value that can't be matched by a computer voice. Carly Watters, a member of the Professional Association of Canadian Literary Agents, told The Guardian that "it's not what customers want to listen to." The Audio Publishers Association in New York claims that audiobook sales have significantly increased over the past ten years, with a 2022 study revealing a 25% gain in 2021 alone.
