Even if cautious optimism among economists and business leaders suggests that falling inflation implies the worst of last year's crisis may be over, the head of the International Monetary Fund claims that the global economy is still in a precarious position. IMF managing director Kristalina Georgieva stated on Friday that although current economic conditions are "less bad" than initially anticipated a few months ago, more suffering may be coming.

In her remarks to a panel at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Georgieva stated that interest rate increases by the major economies of the world had "yet to bite" and could cause an increase in unemployment, a situation to which cash-strapped governments may find it challenging to adequately respond. The majority of the world's central banks, including the US Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank, began sharply raising interest rates last year in an effort to rein in the inflation that was, in large part, brought on by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which went up oil costs. ECB President Christine Lagarde promised to "stay the course" in raising borrowing costs to lower inflation to the bank's 2% target during the discussion on Friday. The Fed, for its part, is still totally committed to hitting its 2% target. For "some time" to come, the policy will need to be restrictive, according to Fed Vice Chair Lael Brainard.

The IMF predicted in October that global growth would slow to 2.7% this year from 3.2% in 2022. This could have an adverse effect on that forecast. Despite this, business leaders and economists have signaled in recent weeks that the global economy may be approaching a positive turning point. The risk of energy rationing in Europe this winter has been avoided, inflation in the US and Europe is heading downward, and supply chain bottlenecks are easing. Asia's markets have benefited from China's openness.
