While many people are now familiar with hybrid work, a Microsoft survey found that most bosses are concerned that their employees aren't working as hard when they're not in the office. Eighty-five percent of managers claimed that hybrid work, which involves alternating between in-office and remote work, had made them less confident in their staff members' efficiency. However, the employees' responses were substantially different; 87% reported feeling productive at work.

Microsoft looked at changes in productivity signals, such as meetings and messages, and data from LinkedIn and Glint, an employee management tool owned by Microsoft, in addition to surveying 20,000 employees in 11 countries about their productivity. According to the company, from the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and March 2022, the average user of their video conference app, Microsoft Teams, experienced a weekly increase in meetings of 153%. However, despite having this knowledge, managers continue to worry. Microsoft refers to it as "productivity paranoia" and advises companies to avoid worrying about how much work employees are putting in and instead support their ability to "concentrate on the job that's most important."

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella told the BBC that companies must devise a solution to this issue because it is doubtful that the working environment would go back to how it was before the pandemic. The number of remote jobs on LinkedIn climbed during the pandemic, however, Ryan Roslansky, the boss of LinkedIn, which Microsoft also owns, told the BBC that while this number had decreased to 15% in September 2022 from 20% earlier in the year, it had increased during the pandemic. Just 2% of employment on LinkedIn had remote work before the pandemic, according to Roslansky.
