By carpooling, drivers in France could receive up to $215 from the government in 2023. It is part of a government program to encourage more people to split the cost of their automobile trips to cut carbon emissions. Le Monde reports that 80% of car trips in France are taken only by the driver. Clément Beaune, the nation's minister of transportation, estimates that there are 200 million vacant seats in cars every day. And the government wants to pay people to change that.

Drivers who sign up on a carpooling app and then complete 10 brief trips (less than 80 kilometers) with at least one additional passenger will receive roughly $107 in 2023. These trips must all be completed within three months. By joining a carpool for three lengthier trips (more than 80 kilometers) three times in three months, drivers can earn an additional $107. The perks, though, won't be available to users of carpooling apps already. According to France, there are currently 900,000 trips made by carpoolers every day. By 2027, the government hopes to increase that number to 3 million. Additionally, local governments have received additional funding to promote carpooling in their regions. This might be used to establish designated carpooling spots where individuals can wait for a vehicle to share. There are already "carpooling lines" in some parts of France that feature stops where people may wait for a car, much like a bus or a taxi, with wait periods of as little as a few minutes.
