The term "strike" has always meant to hit someone or something. In business, a "strike" occurs when employees refuse to work. They "hit back" against their bosses. Strikes occur when an agreement on working conditions or wages cannot be reached.
When everyone quits, the firm begins to lose money. They are no longer producing goods for sale, yet they must continue to pay rent and insurance. This empowers workers to bargain for a better deal.
However, workers are not paid while on strike, which drives them to reach an agreement as soon as possible.
During a strike, employees would frequently "picket," or stand outside the workplace with protest placards.
The workers of Egypt's King Ramses III sat down and resisted working in 1159 BC. The first reported strike in modern times occurred in 1786 in Philadelphia, USA.
