In 2022, the two biggest airlines in Japan continued to rank among the world's most punctual. According to airline analysts OAG, All Nippon Airways (ANA) was the most punctual of the 20 busiest carriers in the world by the number of flights. The second-place finisher was Japan Airlines (JAL).

Because airports and airlines drastically miscalculated the number of people who would wish to travel again in 2022, many flights in the US and Europe were delayed or canceled. But according to OAG's John Grant, worldwide airline punctuality has already reached its pre-pandemic levels. According to OAG's data, in 2022 88.8% of ANA flights and 88.1% of JAL flights arrived no later than 15 minutes after departure. On OAG's list of all airlines, which was headed by the smaller Garuda Indonesia, ANA, and JAL were ranked sixth and seventh, respectively. Despite flying to only nearly half as many locations as ANA or JAL, Garuda saw 95.6% of its flights arrive on time, according to data from FlightConnections.

In a different punctuality study conducted by airline analysts Cirium, the two Japanese airlines came in second and third. The top airline on Cirium's list was the Brazilian carrier Azul, which only flies to a few foreign destinations but has over 150 domestic ones. Azul ranked 11th overall and fourth among big airlines on the OAG list. According to Cirium, Haneda Airport in Tokyo was the most punctual airport in the world in 2022, with 90.3% of its more than 370,000 flights departing on time and 89.2% of them arriving on time.
