A Monopoly is a dominant market share held by a single company; they "own" all or nearly all of the market for a particular product or service.

It is viewed as an unjust advantage, and there are laws in place in some nations to prevent monopolies.

Without competition, the monopoly can increase or decrease prices at will. They are frequently able to purchase or produce inventory at low prices (economy of scale), allowing them to reduce their prices and stifle competition.

A Natural Monopoly can occur when a company has a patent on a unique product or a contract with the government to provide services.

Microsoft Corporation held hegemony in computer software and operating systems for many years.

A duopoly consists of two firms sharing the market, while an oligopoly consists of a small number of firms with equal market presence and influence.
