For your "ideal" life, how much money would you need? The assumption that people want to be as wealthy as possible is a common one, according to UK researchers. They investigated if this is the case in a study that was published in Nature Sustainability.
In two surveys, nearly 8,000 people from 33 nations were asked to consider their ideal life and how much money they would need for it. Participants were invited to select a prize sum that would make them happy, with jackpots ranging from $10,000 to $100 billion. Most respondents in 86% of nations, including the UK, chose $10 million or less. Additionally, the majority of individuals in certain nations, including Russia and India, claimed they could live their ideal lives on $1 million or less. Some attendees claimed they required significantly more. For instance, 32% of US respondents to the first survey chose $100 billion, compared to only 8% in China. In the second survey, over 40% of participants from Indonesia and 11% from Russia chose $100 billion.
People who chose $100 billion came from both wealthy and underdeveloped countries, but they tended to be younger, more driven by success and power and residents of nations where inequality is more acceptable. The findings, according to the researchers, cast doubt on the notion that having unlimited wants is both common and normal.
