Google has announced that it will be laying off 12,000 employees, or roughly 6% of its workforce, as the tech industry's economic growth experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic starts to recede.
Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet, notified employees of the layoffs via email, which was also published on the company's news site.
All across "Alphabet," "product areas," "functions," "levels," and "regions," Pichai said, thousands of positions will be terminated. The cuts are the largest in the company's history and follow the announcement of tens of thousands of jobs being eliminated at other digital firms.
Just this month, major companies in the sector have disclosed at least 48,000 layoffs. Microsoft, for example, has announced that it will be eliminating 10,000 jobs or about 5% of its staff. Even though that's a small percentage of its 1.5 million employees, Amazon has announced that it will be eliminating 18,000 positions.
Meta, Facebook's parent company, announced in the autumn of 2022 that it would eliminate 11,000 jobs or 13% of its workforce. Elon Musk also downsized his staff shortly after acquiring the social media platform Twitter.
The rise of the remote workforce has resulted in rising demand, which has led to recent rapid expansion. By the end of 2022, Google will have increased its staff from 119,000 to 187,000. The recent drop in digital purchases and income from online ads has hurt the tech industry.
According to John Blevins, a professor of business administration at Cornell University, the impact of the cutbacks in the technology sector will not be as severe as it may first appear.
According to Blevins, "these laid-off workers will readily get new jobs," most likely at smaller technology firms. He continued, "Their knowledge will be transferred and will actually serve the greater good for all concerned."
